( revenge isn't her style or at least not against most people. it's why, as river hears of what has occured, she investigates. it's a quiet affair, gathering information, listening. if she can find out what has happened, stop it in some way-- well, whether or not she'd be a target she doesn't want other people to die.

it leads her across the city, sitting and overhearing conversations, quietly questioning those that she speaks to. river wants to get a general feeling, to see who might give themselves away in conversation )

loren's lament
( paperwork. river has no idea how she was roped into it but it's not her job, getting her to do her own work for the university was task enough. it's why, sitting at a desk trying to figure out what the hell she's reading, river stops the next person to pass her )

This needs something to pass the time.

( a drink, perhaps? )

[As much as he dislikes dealing with these letters and complaints, activities in the evening or indoors are much easier for Jonathan's nature and he understands the importance of helping out as he can. He might have preferred something else but he cannot complain too much.

Nonetheless he's somewhat grateful when the woman - a new arrival, perhaps? - stops him and he gives a dark chuckle.]

Agreed, but there is little I can think that would make this go any faster. Unless you have something in mind?

[ at some point, river will overhear a conversation between an older woman who sports a green jewel in her hair and a landern man.

it happens early in the morning and the woman is currently healing the man of some bruises, free of charge at her insistence. judging by the quiet conversation they're having, the man has gotten them from a fight he got into with some blood the evening before in a bar. he managed to shake them off and get back to his residence in the river north in one piece, but that doesn't put the woman's mind at ease.

the woman warns him, ]
Stay away from the docks if you're out at night, okay? A friend and I- We ran across some men trying to kill a man there. He managed to escape with our help, but I don't know if they're still there or not. Best to be careful.

Oh-! [ zita looks a little surprised when she's addressed by someone else — also a little fearful. she hadn’t told anyone of authority of this yet, wondering how to inform someone of this without attention being drawn to her.

there’s an urge to play dumb, to stay out of trouble, but zita prides herself on her intelligence and she does feel guilty for not speaking about this matter yet with someone else.

she sighs and looks around, trying to make sure no one else is eavesdropping on this subject matter. ]
A group of men. Around four or so.

It seems they had jumped a man when he was drunk somewhere else. Took him to the docks to interrogate him for something. [ she thinks. the man wasn’t the most coherent man when she and mordred were saving him. ]

I think Loren might not think too highly of us if we offered to help and then left instead. [Jonathan points out mildly.] But I would be happy to get something for you to drink while we work through this together, Lady. Coffee or tea for preference?

[ zita pauses at the request to go back to the docks. talking about the incident is one thing; going back there, in broad daylight, is something she's uneasy about. she isn't sure if the people there worked at the docks or had friends there or would find some other way to find out her return to the docks.

but... she already feels bad for not informing someone of authority about this incident. she bites her lower lip, considering this. ]

... Alright. [ it's clear she's reluctant but, at the same time, she is saying yes and she's slowly yet surely steeling herself for this. ] I'll take you there and I'll- I'll try to point out anyone if they look familiar.

I've heard that before. [He chuckles.] Although not since my student days. I'll bring you something, Lady.

[And Jonathan is true to his word, leaving only long enough to find some tea and coffee to take back to the room, both of which he sets out for her. The scent is enough for him (and has to be, really) as he starts looking through the letters as well.]

I don't believe we've met. I'm Dr Jonathan Reid.

Zita. I go by Zita Harrington these days.

[ with that settled, she now motions for river to follow her towards the direction of the docks. it's not too far, given the fact they're closer to the rivers than the queen's residence in their current location. zita can only hope it means they'll be quick to get there and quicker to leave.

but as they make their way there, zita has to ask: ]
Are you investigating the- [ she pauses, wanting to be careful with her choice of words.

one could never know who is eavesdropping or not, judging them for how they speak a certain subject. ]
-the series of incidents that have been occuring?

They're a most unpleasant sight come every morning.
thricefold: (071. how can they‚ ‘cause when i sleep.)

I see. [ she presses her lips together into a thin line, taking her time to think of an answer while she guides them closer and closer towards the docks. ] Would it be rude of me to ask what you have heard so far?

[ she sounds suspicious and wary now, especially in light of agreeing to do this, and she almost feels bad for it. almost.

while she wants to believe that these are good intentions - she is the only one zita has come across investigating these spree of murders, after all - zita wants to be sure that she's not walking into a trap.

after having a pile of supply crates crash dropped on her by one of the would-be(?) killers, she feels like she has a right to be a bit suspicious. ]
