In many ways it's exactly like working at the Pembroke again, making his way from patient to patient, tending to wounds with Mary's presence a constant reassurance. She's quick to find what he asks for and doesn't voice any complaints or let any squeamishness show, which is all he needs right now. And if she seems to notice when he has to look away for a moment while stitching a particularly deep wound, she doesn't say anything which is also appreciated. He imagines she has questions, but hopefully he can avoid them for a little longer.
Eventually the work slows, although he doesn't fool himself that it's truly over since he's never known a hospital that was quiet for long, and he has a moment to speak with Mary properly.
"I should be telling you that, Mary," he answers. "You've been up as long as I have, and working just as hard. I'm used to long shifts but you're not. I appreciate the help but you really should go and rest as well."
