[Jonathan doesn't like fire much either, but he's started to realise that the shield does in fact help, if he can bypass his own inherent fear of what it represents. It takes a great deal of focus to manage both as well as the hunger that seems even stronger now, a match to his senses that can pick up the pulsing, afraid hearts in the buildings and streets around him. There's so much blood and fear and death it's overwhelming, and it's all he can do to focus on dragging the unconscious, injured man clear of the flames while keeping his shield in place.
So it's only as he hears a yell of fear and surprise behind him as well as a deep, unfamiliar voice that he realises what's happening and turns around to see a monster of a figure there. The unconscious man is clear of the flames and will survive a little longer, so Jonathan draws his sword and gun and faces the creature.]
