002 A Dream of Spring

I could certainly do that. I have no problems working from patterns or, if you aren't quite sure how to draw it out, I'm a fair artist on my own. We could work together.

( Sansa grins at him. She hasn't had a chance to make pretty things in a long time and the idea of being able to embroider a pattern is a pleasing one - it will be nice to have something to do other than utilitarian sewing. )

What did you have in mind?

I can draw... uh, probably.

[He can draw perfectly round cats, but probably a more intricate pattern is something he can manage. He'll try.]

I was thinking something like... [He holds up his hands, like he's going to gesture this pattern somehow, but then he just stands there and thinks about it. Hmm.] Kind of like flowers?

Oh, flowers? I can do any sort of things with flowers or vines. Was there a particular sort of flower that you liked? Roses or snowdrops or tulips?

( Sansa is entirely too excited about the prospect of this project, honestly, because she so desperately wants to make pretty things. )

Hmm, well. [Yeah, he's got nothing. It's definitely flowers he's thinking about, but—] I really think I would have to draw it out properly.

[Which is half because he's not particularly gifted in remembering the names of flowers - flowers are nice? Very pretty! But remembering what they're called is an effort he does not have. That said,] Do you know what a Dala horse is? It's a little horse carving, and they paint these flowers on them...

[Local Swede asks non-Swedes about Severely Swedish Thing, unbelievable. This is why he has to draw the picture.]

I do not but if you could draw it for me, I'm certain I could replicate it. Horses are common themes in our clothing as well, so I think I'll be able to manage what you want.

( Sansa gives him an encouraging smile, absolutely ready to dive into this project. )

What pieces do you think you'll want? A vest, I know, but anything else?

[Oh boy!! He's honestly unreasonably excited about getting to draw horses over and over until he Perfects his ideal flower pattern. A treat...]

Oh- more? What about a cloak, then? That one looks nice.

[With its little crowned wolves, which to Emil seem like a... unique choice, but he's sure there's something deeper there, just like he's not asking for horse patterns for fun.]

I will certainly make you a cloak. Perhaps I could have the two match, a bit, so it is clear there is a solid theme throughout? I think that might look quite nice indeed.

( Sansa is eager for the project even if she has to wait on Emil's drawings and she cannot contain her excitement. )

I've been making utilitarian things for a long while, winter having come. It will be nice to make pretty things again.

That would be excellent. I'm sick of how boring the clothes they sell around here are!

Do you usually make clothes and things? I don't know anything about sewing.

I've almost always sewn my own clothes. There's been only a very few occasions where I've let my dresses be made for me by someone else and I've never truly liked them as much as my own. I would love to sew for you.

( Having someone willing to commission her is a victory in and of itself, truly. )

I hope to open a shop, one day, but until then I'll just take commissions.

[He's ready and willing to spend all of his money on even more clothes. When he starves, it was worth it... for fashion.]

I don't think I've ever had anything made for me, even at home... It's all from shops.

[From the sale rack, because he's poor now, but never mind.]

Can I watch? I've got nothing else to do, so...

Watch? Most certainly. I cannot imagine that sewing is terribly interesting to the person who isn't doing the sewing but I definitely don't mind the company.

( Sansa enjoys Emil's company, all told, and he has become a friend here in Draega. She's never had a male friend interested in what he wears aside from whether or not it was clean so that's novel, as well, and amuses her. )

[He just loves to look good... it's his number one vice. Anyway, he settles in to watch her do her needlework; it really is interesting, at least in the sense that, uh, he objectively knew people did this but he's never thought about the process, you know? He's so spoiled.]

Hmm, I guess! I don't know how to sew, so it's the same as watching some other thing I don't know how to do.

Ah, well, my lady mother made sure I was schooled in all the arts the lady of a household might undertake. I can sew, I can sing, I can read and do sums. I'm not very good at sums, mind you, but I can keep a ledger.

( Sansa works on a particularly tricky bit of needlework and bites her lower lip, concentrating a bit. )

I took to sewing the most, as you can see.

[Ah, so she didn't have to face the terror of Public School. So lucky. Emil can read, and he supposes he could add and subtract if he really had to, more than one might on a regular day, but...]

I hated lessons when I was younger. My father made me learn the piano, and it was terrible. [hmph] At least you can make something.

I find it soothing to work on sewing, honestly. I've never sold any of it before but Draega is different from being back at home. I was a lady of a castle there and I didn't have to worry about money. It's different here. I have to support myself somehow and this is the way I'm going to do it.

( At least it's something she enjoys doing and doesn't mind putting the hours in on. It's not something she'll be bored of quickly. )
